Four second year students of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh, Cahir as part of LEO Tipperary Student Enterprise Programme have with the guidance, support and encouragement of Business Teacher, Ms Harrahill and Student Enterprise co-ordinator Sue Anne O’ Donnell have designed a unique sports glove which solves a problem for all players of hockey, rugby and football games. UShield© team members are all keen football players who are aware of the rules regarding compulsory wearing of gumshields and looked at possible solutions to prevent the loss of or damage to gumshields and so “UShield©” came about.
UShield is a custom designed sports glove in which players can safely hold their gumshield, on the way to and from the pitch and half time, which also ensures players gumshields are also kept clean.
Indeed, in a recent National League game, Kildare captain was sent off for not wearing his gum shield. If he had used the boys’ innovative product, he might have still been on the pitch!
The boys have received ringing endorsements from many people who have seen the product including Tipperary Hurling legend Brendan Cummins, Ladies’ Intercounty players Laura Duggan, Rachel O’ Donnell and Aisling Moloney, comedy duo The Two Johnnies and Dragon’s Den star Gavin Duffy.
The boys, Morgan Lambert, Callum McGrath, Cian O’Brien and Sean Cunningham, won the County Final in LIT on Friday March 9th and are now presenting their idea at the LEO Tipperary Student Enterprise Awards, National Final in Croke Park on Wednesday May 2nd, we wish them every success in this competition and in their ambitions to see this product through to being a commonly used piece of sports gear.
