On Monday 7th March 2016 over 5 ½ thousand second level students and teachers descended on Croke park for a very historic occasion.
Every second level school in the country was being presented with a copy of the “proclamation of the Irish republic” and the “tricolour” the national flag of Ireland, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the “Easter Rising 1916”
Three students in the company of two teachers from each school were treated to a spectacular presentation which included an “Honour Guard” of the Defence Forces, a speech enactment of Thomas Francis Meagher who was the first man in Ireland to fly the tricolour in Waterford in 1848, and a wonderful speech from one President, Michael D.Higgins.
Despite the cold day in Croke Park the three students, Loredana Marginean, John Clapham, Gavin Hickey and the two teachers, Mrs Burke and Mr Landers found the event very inspiring. They enjoyed getting their photographs taken with members of the Defence Forces who were very patient with the thousands there. We look forward to the “flag raising” ceremony that will take place countrywide on Tuesday 15th March and are very proud of Loredana who represented us so well when receiving the proclamation.
